I think we can all agree that 2020 has been a not-so-great year. A series of unfortunate events if you will (any lemony snicket fans out there?! 😂). The only good thing I can say is that I have discovered many good books that are now favourites, and I’ve been doing a good job of not picking books that I know will not be to my liking. I’ve read 54 books so far for 2020, which is usually where I’m at at this time of the year. What with lockdown I would have thought my reading would have increased but perhaps the stress of a pandemic (oh and Netflix) has hindered that a bit.
Over the years I’ve seen many booktubers and book bloggers do this tag. I recently saw Kind of Insanity blog do this post, and it inspired me to give this a go!
Best book you’ve read so far in 2020
I am obsessed with Naomi Novik’s writing style. Spinning Silver is one of the best standalone fantasy books I’ve read! It now holds a special place on my shelf ❤
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2020
Okay I’m going to pick both Shadows of Self (review here ) and The Bands of Mourning (review here ) by Brandon Sanderson for this one. Such great sequels! I know many people didn’t love Mistborn Era 2 as much as they loved Era 1 but I thought they were just as brilliant. Literally nothing about Mistborn series that I don’t like.
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to
I have yet to get my hands on a copy of The Ballad of songbirds and Snakes. It’s been so hard avoiding all the spoilers but I just have to hang in there until they’ll be available in South Africa
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
I don’t like science fiction books but I do love Christopher Paolini so obviously I’m dying to read To Sleep In a Sea or Stars (releasing 15 September) ! I think maybe I can trust the man who blessed us with Eragon to change my mind on sci-fi 😂
I have no words for how truly bad The Betrothed by Kiera Cass was. 1 star lmao.
A pale view of hills by Kazuo Ishiguro. I wont say why yet. I’ll be posting my review in a few days 😁 so stay tuned!
Favourite new author
Kazuo Ishiguro. This is a new to me author. I’ve read two of his book so far this year and I just want to collect them all and read them ya know?!
Newest fictional crush
Waxillium Ladrian from Mistborn Era Two by Brandon Sanderson. I know, y’all are thinking WHAT? I don’t know either okay. It’s just the way it is.
Newest favourite character
Naomi from You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle. The girl takes petty and dramatic to another level, I love her.
Book that made you cry
This was a reread, but to those who’ve read Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare I think y’all know my pain.
Book that made you happy
Once Upon an Eid by various Muslim authors, edited by Aisha Saeed and S.K Ali. I read this in Ramadan just before Eid. Guys it was the cutest and wholesome middle grade book I’ve read and made me so happy with the Muslim rep!
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year
Okay okay. I’ve only bought two physical books this year. Coronavirus really spoiled all my book buying plans *sigh*. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens still has a really pretty cover and the contents were just as perfect. You can read my review here.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
Too many. Here are a few:
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
As many Kazuo Ishiguro books as I can get my hands on
Kingdom of souls by Rena Barron
Born a Crime by Trevor Noah
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Persuasion by Jane Austen
The name of the rose by Umberto Eco
